About the event
Sylvania's First Launch for The Academy Orientation! And we'd love for you to be a part of it!
Your first class with The Academy is always free, and it doubles as your audition.
This is Orientation: the very first workshop of The Academy's High School Musical 2 season at our brand new Sylvania location, open to new and returning students alike. You will present your prepared song and monologue solo for the creative team while the rest of the group works on a separate activity. This is not a pass or fail screening, it is our introduction to you.
What to prepare:
A 1-1.5 minute up-tempo song or ballad in the spirit of High School Musical 2 (not from the show itself)
A 45-60 second monologue in a similar theme
Dance: no preparation needed, choreography is taught on the day
Please wear clothes and footwear you can move comfortably in. Returning students, feel free to wear your MMC shirt!
Suggested shows for song or monologue inspiration: Grease, Legally Blonde the Musical, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Mean Girls the Musical, The Prom, Descendants (musicals and films), Camp Rock, Lemonade Mouth, Any contemporary musical (2000s-2020s) with a fun, bold, or identity-driven tone
These are suggestions only. You are welcome to choose material from any show that fits the theme and that you feel most confident performing.
IMPORTANT TIPS: We want to get to know YOU!
Choose something that shows your energy and personality.
The show is about staying true to yourself, so pick material that feels authentic to you.
You do not need to be technically perfect. Show up, give it a go, and have fun with it. We have all season to refine, learn and grow.
How the Season Works
Orientation (2, last on Thu 13 Aug): General auditions plus workshops on the show, scenes, singing, and choreo. You present your song and monologue solo while the rest of the group works on a separate activity. After Orientation, you'll be asked whether you'd like to join the cast for Callback Auditions, that decision is yours.
Callback week (Thu 20 Aug): Any student booked into the class, trialling or returning, is welcome to audition for specific roles, using the Audition Pack sent ahead of this week.
IMP AUDITION NOTE: Cast is announced later in the season than usual, which means 3 weeks less than usual before diving into full official content for a full two-hour production, most likely across two show days, and different roles across both. If you're auditioning for a main role, we ask for full, consistent attendance from here on, unless you're absolutely unable to make it. This isn't a rule for its own sake, it's to make sure you feel confident and prepared once you're on that stage. We'll always work with you if something genuinely comes up.
Cast Announcement (Thu 27 Aug): Roles confirmed, full rehearsals begin.
Not ready to audition on Day 1? That is okay! The general audition is highly encouraged but we understand nerves are real. If you need a week to find your feet first, we will work with you.
Students who prefer to focus on ensemble rather than audition for a principal role are equally welcome and equally valued.
